GULLFOSS – THE GOLDEN WATERFALL
It comprises two cascades, one 11 and the other as much as 21 meters high! Every second 400 cubic meters of water flows through here – these numbers speak for themselves. At the beginning of the 20th century, Gullfoss was to be turned into a hydropower plant, but the plans were given up thanks to Sigriður Tómasdóttir who had threatened to throw herself down off the waterfall if the works began. Today, the waterfall is located within a national park and counts among Iceland’s most famous attractions.
GEYSIR – A GEOTHERMAL FIELD AND STROKKUR, AN ACTIVE GEYSER
Geysir is an Icelandic geyser located in the Haukadalur Valley. It gave name to all geothermal springs in the world – what a celebrity! Geysir was ejecting water up to 80 metres from the 14th century to 1960s, but currently is no longer active. The geothermal field comprises also Strokkur, which remains an active geyser. Watching water being ejected into the air is a truly amazing experience.
THINGVELLIR – ON THE BORDER OF TWO CONTINENTS
We will go to where two tectonic plates meet: the Eurasian and the North-American, to admire the extraordinary landforms. But the name of the place is a totally different story – it is connected with an event very important for Iceland, because the Icelandic parliament Althing, one of the oldest running parliamentary institutions in the world, was convened here for the first time. Thingvellir was made into a national park and inscribed on UNESCO list in 2004.
SELJALANDSFOSS AND SKOGAFOSS – WATERFALLS OF THE SOUTH
Two spectacular waterfalls in the south of Iceland. The waters of the Seljalandsá River fall around 60 metres down into a deep green pool at the Seljalandsfoss waterfall. To make this extremely scenic place even more splendid, the waterfall is additionally illuminated. What is more, you can approach the waterfall and even walk behind it! And all this while keeping your feet almost dry. Well, okay, perhaps “not entirely wet”, but it’s worth it! Skogafoss, on the other hand, 25 m wide, is one of Iceland’s largest waterfalls. During sunny days, double rainbows can often be seen above it.
SVARTIFOSS - THE BLACK FALLS
Svartifoss counts among Iceland’s most popular waterfalls. Even though not one of the tallest or most impressive, it is nevertheless stunning thanks to the basalt hexagonal columns that surround it. The waterfall’s name comes from them, by the way. Although such rock formations can be found elsewhere in Iceland, none have the cascade of foamy water that lends so much beauty and fantasy to the basalt columns. The beauty of this place has inspired many famous architects and artists.
HENGIFOSS - THE HANGING FALLS
Hengifoss is considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in eastern Iceland. It falls down an impressive 128 metres and is the third tallest waterfall on the island. Its waters pour from a plateau into a deep gorge, which is why Hengifoss is also called the “Hanging Falls”. Further downstream, there is a smaller waterfall known as Litlanesfoss. The river that forms the Hengifoss waterfall eventually flows into the famous Lake Lagarfljót, which is said to be home to the mythological sea wyrm Lagarfljótsormur.
FJAÐRÁRGLJÚFUR - A STUNNING CANYON
Discover this beautiful and little-known canyon in southern Iceland, near the historic village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. The Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon was formed by the run-off of waters from a glacial lake, which washed away the soft stone leaving only the more resistant rocks behind. As Fjaðrárgljúfur is less crowded than other places in the area, its beauty can be savoured in peace and quiet. What’s more, its isolation makes it a dream destination for photographers and those craving a deep contact with nature.
REYNISFJARA - ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BEACHES
Reynisfjara is one of Iceland’s most distinctive places. Covered in black sand and surrounded by unusual basalt rock formations that look like huge church organs, it definitely stands out on the Icelandic coast. It is not without reason that US “Islands Magazine” singled out Reynisfjara as one of the world’s ten most beautiful beaches.
REYKJADALUR VALLEY – HOT SPRINGS IN THE SOUTH OF ICELAND
Near the town of Hveragerði is the Reykjadalur Valley, whose name means nothing more than “Steam Valley” due to its hot springs, mud pools and hot river, where you can bathe and relax in nature. The hike to the valley is only 3 km one way, and the route is full of picturesque landscapes.
DYRHÓLAEY - THE PUFFIN PENINSULA
One of Iceland’s most beautiful views. The name Dyrhólaey literally means “door hole island”. In spring, many puffins arrive here to nest, so this rocky peninsula is a great place to watch these adorable animals. It is presumed that around 80,000 years ago Dyrhólaey was a separate island, which joined the mainland due to an underwater volcanic eruption. Nowadays, many tourists come here to meet a puffin, but also to marvel at the shoreline seen from high above – and it is a truly fascinating view!
SKAFTAFELL GLACIER - A STUNNING NATIONAL PARK
Iceland’s national park with an area of 4,807 km² located on the south coast of the island, in an area of high volcanic activity. The park is regularly hit with cataclysms such as volcano eruptions and sudden flood waves arising from glacier forelands. Nearly 80% of the park’s area is occupied by the Vatnajökull glacier. It is a breathtaking glacier, and the landscapes and views here can only be described as stunning.
DIAMOND BEACH - A GLACIAL LAND
The Diamond Beach is an extraordinary place, but not because of precious stones. Its phenomenon is the result of a unique combination of Icelandic volcanic forces and massive glaciers. Every summer, huge chunks of ice fall from the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier and flow into the sea, some of them settling on the shore to create a unique sight. See these blocks of ice reflecting the Sun’s rays against the pitch-black sand and you will understand where the name of this beach comes from and why it has become such a popular destination. In Iceland, experiences change depending on the weather, but the Diamond Beach is a place worth visiting at any time of year.
JOKULSARLON – A GLACIAL LAKE
A picturesque lake in South Iceland, created by water flowing from the melting Vatnajökull glacier. In Icelandic, the lake’s name means “glacier lagoon”, and this is not just a poetic description – even in the middle of our summer, smaller and larger blocks of ice are scattered on its beaches. It is one of those places where winter never ends. The lake is located within the Vatnajökull National Park – the largest national park in Europe. In order to truly appreciate the unique atmosphere of this exceptional place, we will wander the black sand beach along the lagoon’s shore. This is one of the very few spots in the world where you can see a river flowing from a glacier and into the sea – a surrealistic and unearthly view
GRJÓTAGJÁ - FEEL LIKE A "GAME OF THRONES" CHARACTER
Grjótagjá is a real treat for Game of Thrones fans, but those who have not seen the series will be impressed as well. It is a dark lava cave with steaming hot water. And while it may be very tempting to take a dip in this hot pond, you should know that it is not allowed! In this area, the hot lava is in close proximity to Earth’s surface, which results in significant spikes in water temperature. Bathing, therefore, can simply be dangerous. Still, it is certainly a place worth visiting when touring all the attractions around Lake Myvatn.
DETTIFOSS - ICELAND’S MOST POWERFUL WATERFALL
Dettifoss, located in the north of Iceland, is much less frequented by tourists than the popular Gullfoss. Although only 45 metres high, it is the most powerful waterfall in Iceland as 400 m³ of water per second flow through it during the summer. The surging masses of water are extremely impressive – so much so that Ridley Scott used Dettifoss for the opening scene of his Prometheus. He couldn’t have chosen better. No waterfall in Europe can compare to this one. Dettifoss could power a city of 100,000 people!
MYVATN - A PICTURESQUE LAKE OF THE NORTH
The picturesque Lake Myvatn will delight you with its landscape. Rocks covered with green moss, caves pitch-black inside and intense blue water, thousands of birds. The lake is located in an area shaped by strong volcanic activity – nowhere else will you see such an accumulation of eroded craters and cooled lava translating into an almost post-apocalyptic landscape. The lake was formed around 2000 years ago and is the fourth largest in Iceland with an area of about 37 km².
GOÐAFOSS - THE WATERFALL OF THE GODS
Goðafoss is closely linked to one of the most important events in Icelandic history, the conversion from paganism to Christianity in the year 1000. According to old sagas, statues of Norse gods were thrown into the waterfall in a symbolic act of conversion. According to legend, this is where its name comes from – Goðafoss, the “Waterfall of the Gods”.
HÚSAVÍK - THE ORIGINS OF ICELAND IN THE FAR NORTH
You will no doubt be familiar with typical Icelandic urban architecture – colourful wooden houses, charming harbours and dozens of mooring cutters. Such postcard-perfect views await you in Husavik. This town in the north of the island lives from small-scale tourism and fishery. According to the oldest accounts, Húsavík was the first place reached by the ancient Scandinavians. A combination of history, relaxation and beautiful scenery? Yes, that’s what awaits us along the way.
THE WESTFJORDS
The Westfjords are undoubtedly one of Iceland’s most remote and spectacular regions. Due to its location, not many tourists get there. There are few small towns in the region, but what’s best of all lies in between – treats not found in other parts of the island! The highest cliffs, millions of birds, shipwrecks or beaches unlike any other.
We’ll look for seals, espy puffins and, if we’re lucky, even see whales from land. We will be travelling through the wildest area in Iceland, so no matter what your expectations are, whether you are a wildlife lover or not, you will find spots that will delight you so much that it will only be a matter of time before you return here 🙂
ÍSAFJÖRÐUR - THE SKUTULSFJÖRÐUR FJORD TOWN
Ísafjörður is the largest town in the Westfjords. Although actually a settlement, it is one of the few large enough to be considered a town. Ísafjörður is located on the sandspit (“eyri” in Icelandic) of the Skutulsfjördur fjord. In other words, the town’s location is beautiful. Despite its small population and isolation from the rest of the country, Ísafjörður has a real urban character. Colourful narrow streets and many beautiful old buildings can be found there. What’s more, a music festival is held there every year and the town can boast of many good restaurants. Ísafjörður may be small, but it is an extremely interesting place that will captivate you with its beautiful surroundings, cuisine and many attractions.
DYNJANDI
Dynjandi is a unique waterfall located in the Westfjords. It is also known as Fjallfoss, and its most special feature is that it is not actually one waterfall. Dynjandi is made up of all sorts of smaller waterfalls, hence its uniqueness. In Icelandic, its name means “thunder” and accurately reflects the sound it makes. Due to its location in the remote Westfjords, the waterfall is not accessible all year round, as in winter it is often cut off from the rest of the country.
GARÐAR SHIPWRECK AND HNJÓTUR PLANES
Exploring Iceland, one can also come across such gems as wrecks and abandoned ships or planes. One of these is the GARÐAR BA 64 shipwreck, described as the oldest steel ship in Iceland. The ship was built in 1912, which is when the famous Titanic sank. Also nearby is the Hnjótur aircraft wreck site, which, like the shipwreck, is a phenomenal place to take souvenir photos of rusting objects.
LATRABJARG - THE LAND OF THE PUFFINS
Latrabjarg are unusual cliffs in the Westfjords, home to many species of birds. They host the world’s largest colony of razorbills, as well as puffins, northern gannets and guillemots. These birds come to Latrabjarg to nest on cliff shelves. So take the trail which extends for more than a kilometre along the cliffs and offers great views of the surrounding area. Watch the birds and learn about their habits.
KIRKJUFELL – ICELAND’S DISTINCTIVE PEAK
Kirkjufell is a characteristically shaped peak on the north shore of Iceland’s Snæfellsnes peninsula. It is one of Iceland’s many “postcard” views. A photographer’s paradise. In addition to the peak itself, there are Kirkjufellsfoss (waterfall) and a lake located a short distance away. On calm days, the water reflects a mirror image of Kirkjufell. An impressive and phenomenal spot at any time of year. Fans of the TV series Game of Thrones will no doubt associate this peak with Jon Snow’s journey beyond The Wall (Season 7).
SEYÐISFJÖRÐUR – THE VILLAGE OF WALTER MITTY
We will also visit the village where the film The Secret Life of Walter Mitty was shot. To get to Seyðisfjörður, you first have to drive up a high hill coping with numerous curves. The incredible expanse and that view of the harbour appearing in the distance – that’s really something! This is exactly the same route Walter Mitty took on his longboard in the film – and there will be the option of such a descent for the brave.
ARNARSTAPI - AN ATMOSPHERIC FISHING VILLAGE
To experience the true charm of Iceland, we will visit centuries-old small fishing villages and seaside towns nestled between ravishing fjords and surrounded by hot springs, with which many local legends are connected. Arnarstapi is a place where you can see many birds in spring, and the village itself is stunning with its scenery and tranquillity.
GLYMUR – TREKKING TO THE WATERFALL
Glymur was for years considered the tallest waterfall in Iceland. Recently, however, it has been ranked second, but it still consistently impresses. And though the second in height, it is the tallest waterfall you can climb relying on your own strength. So trek with us and experience the beauty of Iceland’s landscapes. You can choose between two non-demanding routes, including one with a river crossing.
REYKJAVIK – VISITING EUROPE’S SMALLEST CAPITAL
The first settler in the Icelandic capital, and by extension its founder, was Ingólfur Arnarson, who called the place “smoky bay”. The name reflected its appearance at the time, as all that could be seen was the steam coming out of the hot springs. Today, Reykjavik is a bustling minimetropolis. Together with adjacent towns it forms the capital agglomeration, which is home to the majority of the island’s population. Take a stroll around the capital, discover the beauty of the local concert hall that resembles a block of ice, and give yourself time to stock up on souvenirs for your loved ones!
SNÆFELLSNES AND SURROUNDINGS - FISHING VILLAGES
Iceland is famous for its delicious fish, which you can get in fishing harbours. Our itinerary could not do without some fishing villages to admire, as they count among the most important points on the country’s economic map. With a bit of luck, we will be able to buy delicious fish directly from a cutter. We will also discover the mystery of a certain shipwreck in Akranes and take a look into the cave of the scary troll 🙂
NIGHTS IN TENTS UNDER A STARRY SKY @DECATHLON
Like true travellers, we will spend our nights in tents. In collaboration with our partner, we have chosen Mh100 Fresh&Black blackout tents. However, the most enthusiastic among you will certainly not pass up the opportunity to sleep under a starry sky. Far from the cities with their lights, in the Icelandic wilderness, the nights under a tent are amazing and the sky like nowhere else! During the trip, we will be staying overnight at camp sites with facilities such as toilets, showers, canteen, electricity or internet access (there may be an extra charge) available. As regards equipment, we provide: cooking equipment, Forclaz foam hiking mattresses and tents supplied by Decathlon. If you want to see everything Iceland has to offer, then this expedition is definitely for you!
FOOD
During the trip, we will mostly cook for ourselves, with tourist gas cookers and all the camping equipment at our disposal: gas cylinders, pots, camping chairs and tables, as well as mats to sit on in the green Icelandic meadows. We will bring some products with us, but there is no need to take a huge amount of food. On the road, we will be stopping at local supermarkets offering a full range of products for quite affordable prices. See here for examples of basic food product prices. Our experience shows that about 200 to 250 euros for food should suffice. Eating in restaurants is rather expensive, but for the willing we will certainly propose a few local diners worth trying. Iceland’s hit is fish bought directly from a cutter – amazing taste and very good prices.
COMFORTABLE TRANSPORT BY MODERN VANS
During the entire trip, we will be travelling in Renault Trafic 9-passenger vans (or similar). We cooperate with a reputable car rental in Iceland and the vans come with full insurance coverage.
This Icelandic company has a large fleet of vehicles and convenient car pick-up points, which ensures comfort and smoothness in organising trips. What is more, the hired cars are covered by an additional Platinum package, so any participant with a driving licence can try their hand at Icelandic roads 🙂 Note! Our expedition is in the self-drive formula, which means that both the participants and the leader will take turns behind the wheel. Together, we will explore quite a piece of Iceland: glaciers, waterfalls, hot springs – the whole south of this beautiful country as well as its western fishing villages. It is worth mentioning that the roads in Iceland are straight and the landscapes seen from a van’s main seat stun even more!
GLACIER WALK
Here comes one of the most interesting attractions not only in Iceland, but in general! A walk on one of the glaciers that are shrinking at a rate of a dozen or so percent a year, which means they can melt down completely still in our lifetime. It’s worth seeing them for yourself and finding out what actions may help us save this natural wonder. Join a thrilling adventure on one of South Iceland’s most interesting glaciers – Sólheimajökull. An ideal opportunity for those who want to combine amazing views, a bit of adrenaline and geological knowledge. This trek can be managed by everyone, regardless of their fitness level.

HÚSAVIK WHALE WATCHING CRUISE
Experience a three-hour boat cruise around Skjálfandi Bay in search of whales. To this end, you will set off on a traditional Icelandic boat. Along the way, you may also have a chance to spot humpback whales, dwarf fin whales and white-beaked dolphins or porpoises. In early summer, blue whales appear in Skjálfandi Bay. This fantastic tour takes you to traditional whale-watching areas, where you will have the opportunity to observe these animals in their natural habitat. Bear in mind, however, that every cruise is different and you never know what amazing species and wildlife shows you will encounter during your trip.

Acting within the scope of the information obligation under generally applicable law – we would like to inform you that due to the rapidity, changeability and impossibility to precisely predict the introduction of internal sanitary regulations in the countries through which the journey to the final destination of the package travel takes place, a situation may arise in which the Traveller, under the above-mentioned regulations, will be obliged to perform, before entering the territory of a given country, tests for the SARS-CoV-2 virus, and then to cover the costs of these tests in full, in order to continue the journey to the final destination of the package travel. Nevertheless, in order to meet the expectations of our participants, we, for our part, provide full information support in the field of applicable and ongoing regulations along the package travel route. Such information shall be sent to participants of particular trips by email. At the same time, we would like to inform you that, on the basis of Article X of the Package Travel Terms and Conditions, the Traveller may, at any time prior to the start of the package travel, cancel his/her participation in the package travel (withdraw from the package travel contract), in accordance with the calculation of the cancellation costs included in the contract.
