Expedition Plan
Austere, virgin nature, the cleanest air in Europe and views of glaciers and volcanoes – these are only some of the marvels this amazing island can boast of. Hot springs, geysers blowing out with clockwork precision and gorgeous waterfalls just wait there to be admired. During the entire stay, we will travel by Soloist vans, each day setting off for a new adventure from our place of accommodation. We will see everything Iceland has to offer: impressive glaciers, peaceful rivers and glacial lakes, scenic bays and fjords, and majestic volcanoes. Our active days will end with a bit of rest at a farm surrounded by lakes and mountains, relax in a wooden hot tub outside, and horseback riding for the willing. GULLFOSS – THE GOLDEN WATERFALL
It comprises two cascades, one 11 and the other as much as 21 meters high! Every second 400 cubic meters of water flows through here – these numbers speak for themselves. At the beginning of the 20th century, Gullfoss was to be turned into a hydropower plant, but the plans were given up thanks to Sigriður Tómasdóttir who had threatened to throw herself down off the waterfall if the works began. Today, the waterfall is located within a national park and counts among Iceland’s most famous attractions.
GEYSIR – A GEOTHERMAL FIELD AND STROKKUR, AN ACTIVE GEYSER
Geysir is an Icelandic geyser located in the Haukadalur Valley. It gave name to all geothermal springs in the world – what a celebrity! Geysir was catapulting water up to 80 metres from the 14th century to 1960s, but currently is no longer active. The geothermal field comprises also Strokkur, which remains an active geyser. An amazing experience is guaranteed when watching water being ejected into the air.
THINGVELLIR – ON THE BORDER OF TWO CONTINENTS
We will go to where two tectonic plates meet: the Eurasian and the North-American, to admire the extraordinary landforms. But the name of the place is a totally different story – it is connected with an event very important for Iceland, because the Icelandic parliament Althing, one of the oldest running parliamentary institutions in the world, was convened here for the first time. Thingvellir was made into a national park and inscribed on UNESCO list in 2004
SKAFTAFELL NATIONAL PARK – STUNNING VIEWS OF A GLACIER
A national park in Iceland with an area of 4,807 km² located on the south coast of the island, in an area of high volcanic activity. The park is regularly hit with cataclysms such as volcano eruptions and sudden flood waves arising from glacier forelands. Nearly 80% of the park’s area is occupied by the Vatnajökull glacier. It is a breathtaking glacier, and the landscapes and views here can only be described as stunning. We will have the opportunity to see those wonders with our own eyes.
ICELAND’S VOLCANOES
Iceland has about 130 volcanoes (both active and inactive). Around 30 active volcanic systems can be found beneath the island. Volcanoes are one of the most prominent features of Iceland’s landscape, defining the nature of this land, creating endless fields of moss-covered lava, vast plains of black sand, jagged peaks and huge craters. Not a decade has gone by without an eruption since the turn of the 20th century. Most active volcanoes are far from towns.
JÖKULSÁRLÓN – A GLACIER LAGOON
A picturesque lake in South Iceland, created by water flowing from the melting Vatnajökull glacier. In Icelandic, the lake’s name means “glacier lagoon”, and this is not just a poetic description – even in the middle of our summer, smaller and larger blocks of ice are scattered on its beaches. It is one of those places where winter never ends. The lake is located within the Vatnajökull National Park – the largest national park in Europe. In order to truly appreciate the unique atmosphere of this exceptional place, we will wander the black sand beach along the lagoon’s shore! This is one of the very few spots in the world where you can see a river flowing from a glacier and into the sea – a surrealistic and unearthly view.
SELJALANDSFOSS AND SKOGAFOSS – WATERFALLS OF THE SOUTH
Two spectacular waterfalls in the south of Iceland. The waters of the Seljalandsá River fall around 60 metres down into a deep green pool at the Seljalandsfoss waterfall. To make this extremely scenic place even more splendid, the waterfall is additionally illuminated. What is more, you can approach the waterfall and even walk behind it! And all this while keeping your feet almost dry. Well, okay, perhaps “not entirely wet”, but it’s worth it! Skogafoss, on the other hand, 25 m wide, is one of Iceland’s largest waterfalls. On sunny days, double rainbows appear over the Skogafoss waterfall quite often.
REYKJAVIK – VISITING EUROPE’S SMALLEST CAPITAL
The capital of Iceland, whose founder and first settler was Ingólfur Arnarson. He called the place the “smoky bay”, because approaching the land he saw steam coming out of hot springs. Today, Reykjavik is a bustling mini-metropolis, and together with adjacent towns it forms the capital agglomeration. We will stroll along the streets of this cosy town, take a look at the local concert hall – Harpa, and those willing may also step in some fish&chips diner. Of course, when in Reykavik, we could not miss its must-see – the island’s most peculiar church, Hallgrímskirkja.
ARNARSTAPI – THE MAGIC OF ICELAND!
To experience the true charm of Iceland, we will visit centuries-old small fishing villages and seaside towns nestled between ravishing fjords, with which many local legends are connected. One of those is the beautiful small village of Arnarstapi, once an important trading port. Surrounded by beautiful basalt rocks, Arnarstapi attracts masses of bird colonies, common terns in particular. In summer you can spend hours and hours just watching the birds – the view of parents with their chicks in nests set up on numerous cliffs is truly remarkable.
REYKJADALUR HOT SPRINGS
Near the town of Hveragerði is Reykjadalur, which freely translates as “Steam Valley”, due to its hot springs, mud pools and thermal river. There you can easily bathe and relax surrounded by nature. The hike to the valley is only 3 km one way, and on the route you will encounter many picturesque landscapes and enjoy the best that Iceland has to offer.
SELJAVALLALAUG - AN ABANDONED SWIMMING POOL
Seljavallalaug is an abandoned outdoor swimming pool located east of Ásólfsskála, South Iceland. Built in 1923, it is one of the oldest pools in Iceland. Originally, the pool was intended to be a place where children could learn to swim, but as this is a common skill – it did not quite serve its purpose. In 2010, the site, due to its location, was affected by the eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano and the pool was completely filled with ash. Today, it counts among Iceland’s tourist attractions – you can bathe in the pool and admission is completely free.
GLYMUR – TREKKING TO THE WATERFALL
Glymur was for years considered the tallest waterfall in Iceland. Recently, however, it has been ranked second, which still doesn’t take away from its charm. And though the second in height, it remains the tallest waterfall you can climb relying on your own strength. So trek with us and experience the beauty of Iceland’s landscapes. You can choose between two routes, one not demanding and the other that includes a river crossing.
DYRHÓLAEY - THE PUFFIN PENINSULA
Dyrhólaey offers one of the most gorgeous views in Iceland. The name of this small rocky peninsula on the south coast of Iceland, near the village of Vík í Mýrdal (“Bay of the Marshy Valley”) literally means “door hole island”. It is believed to have been a separate island about 80,000 years ago, later on attached to the mainland due to an underwater volcanic eruption. Its high post-volcanic cliffs and numerous rock formations emerging from the ocean make this place very often visited by tourists. Also because of the colonies of puffins arriving here in early spring to nest.
REYNISFJARA – A BLACK SAND BEACH
Covered in black sand, the Reynisfjara beach is undoubtedly one of the most impressive stretches of Iceland’s coastline. In 1991, US “Islands Magazine” listed Reynisfjara among the world’s ten most beautiful beaches. It is so unique also because of its picturesque cliffs and amazing basalt rock formations resembling a pipe organ.
PUFFINS, SHEEP AND ICELANDIC HORSES - ICELAND’S ANIMALS
The fantastic Icelandic views will be enhanced by animals we will pass along the way, which, although not very diversified, nevertheless add an extraordinary charm to the beautiful landscapes. The country has twice as many sheep as people, so there will be plenty of opportunities to admire these charming animals. It also hosts the greater part of the puffin population – these funny birds have almost grown into the symbol of Iceland, featured on all kinds of souvenirs and postcards. We will be looking for puffins on the impressive cliffs where the parents build nests and raise their chicks. Puffins can be met in Iceland mainly in summer, until September. We will also see gorgeous Icelandic horses – they are sure to be running freely in the Icelandic fields, but we will be able to watch them every day from the windows of our Guest-house, too.
FOOD
Prices in Iceland count among the things that can make your head spin, so on a day-to-day basis we will primarily be using our fully equipped kitchen at the Soloist house. This is where we will cook our meals together. We will bring some products with us, but there is no need to take a huge amount of food from Poland. On the road, we will be stopping at local supermarkets offering a full range of products for quite affordable prices. See here for examples of basic food product prices. Our experience shows that about 70 to 100 euros for food should suffice. Eating in restaurants is rather expensive, but for those willing we will propose a few local diners worth trying. Iceland’s hit is fish bought directly from a cutter – amazing taste and very good prices.
COMFORTABLE TRANSPORT BY MODERN VANS
During the entire trip, we will be travelling in Renault Trafic 9-passenger vans (or similar) and Dacia Logan 5-passenger vans (or similar). We cooperate with a reputable car rental in Iceland and the vans come with full insurance coverage.
This Icelandic company has a large fleet of vehicles and convenient car pick-up points, which ensures comfort and smoothness in organising trips. What is more, the hired vans are covered by an additional Platinum package, so any participant with a driving licence can try their hand at Icelandic roads 🙂 All the more so as the expedition is in the self-drive formula, which means that both the participants and the leader will take turns behind the wheel. Together, we will explore quite a piece of Iceland: glaciers, waterfalls, hot springs – the whole south of this beautiful country as well as western fishing villages 🙂 It is worth mentioning that the roads in Iceland are straight and the landscapes seen from a van’s main seat stun even more!
THE GUEST-HOUSE (Solisci House)
Overnight stays will be at the Guest-house, located in a very beautiful Icelandic setting about 1.5 h drive from Reykjavik. There you may choose from double, triple or quadruple rooms with bedding (both single and double beds). The house can accommodate up to 2 Soloist groups, but it is large enough and comfortable enough to allow even a significant number of people to rest and relax freely.
The house comes with a fully equipped, spacious kitchen! There is a cooker, oven, two fridges, kettle, all kinds of pots, pans and everything you need to cook a meal. Rooms are provided with bed linen and towels for everyone. Each room is also equipped with a washbasin with a mirror. And if after the entire day of sightseeing you come back wringing wet, a washing machine and a dryer are also available. In the evenings, there will certainly be no shortage of time for a bath in a round wooden hot tub. WiFi is available in the house, however we advise you to put your phones aside during the trip and enjoy the beauty of nature instead.
EXTRAORDINARY SURROUNDINGS – ON A REAL ICELANDIC FARM
This house is owned by Arnes. Arnes is an incredibly nice Icelandic woman with a passion for horse riding. The house is a part of a larger farm where the very Icelandic horses can be found – perfectly fit and beautifully groomed, they will greet you every morning, as their corral is located almost opposite the house. Additionally, anyone willing may test themselves riding one of Arnes’ horses, with our hostess showing them the ropes.
RELAXATION IN A WOODEN HOT TUB
A day in Iceland is very eventful. We explore this beautiful country from the very morning to see as much as we can. Rest assured that it is going to be a very intense week! But we have also allowed for a bit of relaxation during the expedition. Later in the evening, having returned, tired but satisfied, to the Soloist house, we can make use of the wooden hot tub. Above us, just the Icelandic sky where in September mesmerising Northern Lights (!) appear sometimes, the cool Scandinavian air all around, while we’ll be warming up in hot water, regenerating for the next day full of adventures!

GLACIER WALK
Here comes one of the most interesting attractions not only in Iceland, but in general! Trekking on one of the glaciers that are shrinking at a rate of a dozen or so percent a year, which means they can melt down completely still in our lifetime. It’s worth seeing them for yourself and finding out what actions may help us save this natural wonder. Join a thrilling adventure on one of South Iceland’s most interesting glaciers – Sólheimajökull. An ideal opportunity for those who want to combine amazing views, a bit of adrenaline and geological knowledge. This walk can be managed by everyone, regardless of their fitness level. For those over the age of 10.

Sky Lagoon, the Icelandic spa, is one of Iceland’s newest attractions. A visit to Sky Lagoon involves not only relaxing in the hot springs, but also a 7-step relaxation ritual derived directly from Icelandic culture. It consists of relaxation in the hot springs, plunge in the icy water, visit to the sauna, refreshing in a cold fog-mist and, finally, body scrub, warming up in the steam room and cooling the body in the shower. WHALE-WATCHING CRUISE

Acting within the scope of the information obligation under generally applicable law – we would like to inform you that due to the rapidity, changeability and impossibility to precisely predict the introduction of internal sanitary regulations in the countries through which the journey to the final destination of the package travel takes place, a situation may arise in which the Traveller, under the above-mentioned regulations, will be obliged to perform, before entering the territory of a given country, tests for the SARS-CoV-2 virus, and then to cover the costs of these tests in full, in order to continue the journey to the final destination of the package travel. Nevertheless, in order to meet the expectations of our participants, we, for our part, provide full information support in the field of applicable and ongoing regulations along the package travel route. Such information shall be sent to participants of particular trips by email. At the same time, we would like to inform you that, on the basis of Article X of the Package Travel Terms and Conditions, the Traveller may, at any time prior to the start of the package travel, cancel his/her participation in the package travel (withdraw from the package travel contract), in accordance with the calculation of the cancellation costs included in the contract.
